Nail to the coffin of prof Campbell's theory of cancer supposedly triggered by protein

.

A long-time vegan diet promoter Prof-emeritus T.C Campbell of Cornell University, author of The China Study book, used to claim in his studies that adding protein to high carbohydrate mice diet does trigger the cancer while removing it reduces the frequency and size of cancerous tumors. Campbell argues that casein, a protein found in milk from mammals, is "the most significant carcinogen we consume" (see Wiki T. Colin Campbell and Talk by T. Colin Campbell Archived 2011-04-17 at the Wayback Machine, Google Videos, 20:24 mins, accessed December 3, 2010.).

Campbell's theory has been questioned for some time. Most notably, Denise Minger has posted some very in-depth and thorough analyses on-line discussing what exactly may have gone wrong with Campbell's research.

This study found that the reality is in fact quite the opposite to the scientist's claim, showing that a high protein low carbohydrate diet had in fact almost completely protected the genetically-modified cancer-susceptible mice against getting cancer (while the high-carbohydrate control group got 50% cancer!)

Abstract

Since cancer cells depend on glucose more than normal cells, we compared the effects of low carbohydrate (CHO) diets to a Western diet on the growth rate of tumors in mice. To avoid caloric restriction–induced effects, we designed the low CHO diets isocaloric with the Western diet by increasing protein rather than fat levels because of the reported tumor-promoting effects of high fat and the immune-stimulating effects of high protein. We found that both murine and human carcinomas grew slower in mice on diets containing low amylose CHO and high protein compared with a Western diet characterized by relatively high CHO and low protein. There was no weight difference between the tumor-bearing mice on the low CHO or Western diets.

Additionally, the low CHO-fed mice exhibited lower blood glucose, insulin, and lactate levels. Additive antitumor effects with the low CHO diets were observed with the mTOR inhibitor CCI-779 and especially with the COX-2 inhibitor Celebrex, a potent anti-inflammatory drug. Strikingly, in a genetically engineered mouse model of HER-2/neu–induced mammary cancer, tumor penetrance in mice on a Western diet was nearly 50% by the age of 1 year whereas no tumors were detected in mice on the low CHO diet. This difference was associated with weight gains in mice on the Western diet not observed in mice on the low CHO diet. Moreover, whereas only 1 mouse on the Western diet achieved a normal life span, due to cancer-associated deaths, more than 50% of the mice on the low CHO diet reached or exceeded the normal life span. Taken together, our findings offer a compelling preclinical illustration of the ability of a low CHO diet in not only restricting weight gain but also cancer development and progression. What was also interesting that an addition of an anti-inflammatory COX-2 inhibitor drug (Celebrex, 1g/kg body) slowed down the tumor growth by about a half, regardless of a diet! Not sure how to interpret it, perhaps that inflammation accelerates the tumor growth in general?

COX-2 is an n-6 seed oil pathway, predominantly.

You are right!

Interestingly There are studies looking at COX-2 (new studies) and COX-1 (older studies, aspirin) inhibitors, in cancer suppression.

There is solid evidence that inflammation is predisposing to cancer.
The increase in cancer tracks the diet changes in 20th century, including use of seed oils, sugar consumption, and processed foods rich in refined carbohydrates.
the steep rise in cancer in the 20th century is also accompanied by explosion of autoimmune conditions, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular illness, diabetes and obesity.

Stan you're really tied or hooked on the high fat low carb type diet. This is not a negative thought just stating what I see and I'm not judging it negatively. I'm not in any way saying you are wrong or debating it's efficacy but...as I've pondered before some people seem to do good on a really low fat diet.

Why? Since this is true maybe while carbs/low carb may be a factor it may not be THE deciding factor.

I was going to tell you about P.D.Mangan of Rogue Health and Fitness book, "Dumping Iron" but you already have it on your sidebar. I just read it and I believe, although he doesn't state this, it explains this conundrum.

People who cook their own food use less prepared products so get less fortified iron and I think vitamin A which might also be a problem.

The vit A problem is licked by Macrobiotic diets which stay away from a lot of foods with too much vit A.

https://ggenereux.blog/2015/02/12/eca/

An example of macrobiotic diet is Iggy Pop who was a very long time serious drug abuser who now only eats a strict macrobiotic diet. He looks damn good for his age. And in his concerts he seems to have a great deal of energy. Most guys his age sit on the porch.

It may not matter so much what you eat if you stay away from these fortified foods that build up toxins. Not that some are not better than others but that the "level" of poison is the major factor not the actual food itself.

Vitamin A and Iron may be very super useful when you are young and growing fast but they could be a problem over time. Dumping iron can be done but unfortunately I don't know any way to dump vit A.

Form the vit A link above,

"...Decreasing incidence of inflammatory bowel disease in Eastern Canada: a population database study.

The key observations here are:

A remarkable ~35% drop in Crohn’s disease over this time period (1996-2009)
A stunning ~50% drop in Alzheimer’s mortality over this time period ( 2000-2011)..."

This he linked to the collapse of the Eastern Canadian fisheries and the removal of these very high vitamin A level dish from the diet. He gives many other large population studies that show similar disease trends related to excess vitamin A intake.

What popped out in my mind as another influence is a question I have asked many places over and over. It's seems such a mystery to me why some people seem to do very well on a vegetarian diet and some don't. Maybe this is the answer. If a first world wealthy person goes on a vegetarian diet they could have problems due to a eating a large amount of salads and vegetables with high vitamin A. A person in a less developed area would be more likely to eat a vegetarian diet with much less vitamin A. Maybe more starches as a mainstay of of their diet. It would also explain the Chinese and Japanese that eat vast amounts of rice but are in good health at advanced age. This would explain the good health results from the two widely different diets. More meat might mean less vitamin A corresponding to good health with a no carb diet. Could it not be the carbs but the extra vitamin A and iron fortified foods in the diet?

So Sam's Theory of the Lesser Dietary Evil, " is that a high fat high meat diet is not that the meat diet is so superior it's that it has less toxins in it than a normal diet or a diet high in vitamin A that a wealthier person would eat".

Here's another way to get what seem to be all the benefits of a high meat low carb diet without having to actually continuously follow that diet. Fasting but modifying it so that you have a small amount of ketones.

A Periodic Diet that Mimics Fasting Promotes Multi-System Regeneration, Enhanced Cognitive Performance, and Healthspan

The Russians and some Germans following the Russians have this 12 day water fast. Apparently you can get the same benefits in five days if you add a small 400 cal. per day ketone diet. The idea is in a water fast you first start using up glucose then ketones. By adding small amount of ketones to the diet it moves you faster into the ketone portion of the diet faster promoting autophagy and since you have a small amount of food it's easier to do.

I'm not trying to be a smart aleck or say that I know the answers. What I am saying is that I know some people like the Seventh Day Aventist have a primarily plant based diet and live much longer. I'm not sure that you can tie all these problems just to a high carb diet.

There's also other factors that may more easily describe the rise of modern diseases. One could be the fortification of iron in numerous foods.

P.D.Mangan of Rogue Health and Fitness has a book "Dumping Iron" that covers this.

Here's another paper on excessive iron "Excessive early-life dietary exposure: a potential source of elevated brain iron and a risk factor for Parkinson’s disease"

There's also all these vaccines they've been giving us in the modern age. Turns out a large amount of these have been contaminated with mouse and other viruses that have proven to cause cancer. A prominent researcher, Judy Mikovits, that brought this to light thought she would be praised for finding this but instead she was fired and persecuted as that would have cut off profits. I know this video is long but I learned a huge amount from this video. It's very good.

We also know that fasting provides some of the same benefits as low carb diets. I wonder if fasting reduces iron? Another process that does the same is to remove half the blood supply. Possibly the benefit is from dumping iron.

I don't know what the answer is but to me the iron dumping and fasting look to be the easiest way to get the effects we are looking for.
